The Imbewu Trust aims to celebrate local South African theatre internationally by highlighting original work with a global resonance. In collaboration with Horse Trade Theater Group, The Imbewu Trust will showcase Think Theatre Productions’ TIN BUCKET DRUM, performed by leading South African artists that have enriched the South African theatre landscape with their original and unique approach to theatrical storytelling.

Neil Coppen's (2011 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner) play, directed by Karen Logan, follows the story of Nomvula, a spirited child with a revolutionary heart born into a country with a cruel and silent dictatorship. Tin Bucket Drum weaves together elements of magical realism, shadow puppetry, Kabuki theatre and live percussion while offering a fresh twist to the traditional conventions of African storytelling.

Critically acclaimed with standing ovations at the Grahamstown and Hilton Arts festivals, Tin Bucket Drum won the Audience Vote Award for Best Production at MUSHO 2007, A Durban Theatre Award for best actress and best new South African script 2007, and a Standard Bank Ovation award at the Grahamstown 2010 festival. It was featured as The Star, Pretoria Times, The Herald and Witnesses Newspapers pick of the Grahamstown Fringe in 2007.

The production will run 26 July through 5 August 2012 at The Kraine Theater (85 East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery), Thursday through Saturday at 8pm. Tickets ($18/$15 students & seniors) are available online or by calling Smarttix at 212-868-4444.

Multi-Grammy winning South African group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, is to perform two shows at City Winery in New York City on 29 and 30 July 2012.

For over fifty years, the voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo have brought the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a Zulu choral group that sings in the vocal style of isicathamiya or clicks and mbube. Formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the group gained global fame from their work on Paul Simon's landmark African themed album "Graceland." Simon later produced Ladysmith Black Mambazo's first international album, "Shaka Zulu," which went on to win the group's first of three Grammy Awards. The group won their last Grammy in 2009 but have been nominated fourteen times including their most recent release, "Songs From A Zulu Farm."

The group is currently on a European Tour with Paul Simon which is being billed as a Graceland 25th Anniversary Reunion Tour. Once that concert tour finishes the group will arrive in the USA to begin a two week North American tour with the City Winery shows being the first post Graceland Reunion concerts.

Got Zulu? A Symposium on South African Dance & Culture

On 26 September 2012, for its fall World Dance Symposium, the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience at Rutgers University will explore South African Dance and Culture with “Juxtapower,” a company of NYC dancers and musicians.

Juxtapower will provide a comprehensive representation of South Africa through a program that encompasses both traditional and urban dance and music. For its educational component, the Institute is partnering with NJPAC’s Arts Education program to bring the ensemble’s director, Sduduzo Ka-Mbili into the Newark Vocational High School, which participates in its Arts Education program. The artists will offer a workshop called “Zum-boot” on traditional South African dance for students who have been studying other West African dance forms.

In the evening, Juxtapower presents a performance at our traditional space, the Bradley Hall Theater on the Rutgers-Newark Campus beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will feature a journey through South African dance styles from traditional Zulu and Gumboot - a precursor to modern stepping that originated with rural gold mine workers – to “Pantsula,” urban, hip hop-style dance. A reception will follow the performance in which the audience will be able to meet the artists.
