2022 Nelson Mandela International Day Celebration at St. Mark's Church

Theme: 'Do what you can with what you have where you are'

17 July 2022

The Honorable Patricia de Lille, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure of the Republic of South Africa and Consul General Motumisi Tawana. The Minister addressed a Mandela Day event at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery in New York on Sunday, 17 July 2022. More.

SA joins the world celebrating Nelson Mandela Day

The South African government has joined the world in celebrating International Nelson Mandela Day, under the theme: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”.

This year 2022 marks the 13th year since the United Nations General Assembly declared Nelson Mandela's 18 July birthday, International Nelson Mandela Day.

Following the declaration, Madiba called on everyone to honour him by helping their communities.

In answering this call, government leaders will today visit various communities to lend a hand to the needy through acts of charity and community development.

Among the activities taking place is the planting of fruit and indigenous trees, as well as establishing food gardens to educate communities on the effect of climate change and food security.

In addition, there will be a symbolic walk to raise awareness of the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide.

President Nelson Mandela spent his life fighting for a peaceful, non-violent and non-racist society.

"The 2022 International Nelson Mandela Day takes place when several South Africans are mourning the death of their loved ones who have been killed recently through acts of criminality.

“On this day, we urge South Africans to remember the values that former President Mandela embodied by promoting peace in their communities and endeavour to work with the government in building a South Africa that is safe for all," said Phumla Williams, GCIS Director-General.

Full details on the government activities are available on https://www.gov.za/NelsonMandelaMonth2022. – SAnews.gov.za

Nelson Mandela Month 2022

In July, South Africa celebrates former President Nelson Mandela's birthday. 18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day, but as South Africans we embrace the chance to  celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July. This gives everyone the opportunity to heed the call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. As each person acts, they fuel momentum toward positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mr Mandela’s values – fighting injustice, helping people in need and practicing reconciliation. Read more.

June is Youth Month

South Africa is fortunate to have a youthful nation. However, the recent unemployment statistics pertaining to young people is cause for concern. The 2020 fourth quarter Labour Force Survey found that about 8,6 million young people aged between 15 and 34 years are not in education and not in employment.

In helping drawing more young people into the economy, government has under the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention initiated various youth development and empowerment initiatives to support young people.

It ranges from formal education and training; learnerships and internships as well as support for youth entrepreneurship. Our initiatives provide the necessary support for young people to take on their challenges and win. Read more

April is Freedom Month

1 to 30 April

Freedom Month celebrations offer us an opportunity to reflect on progress made thus far in transforming our society, while also examining our challenges.

Although we have made remarkable progress since 1994, the spectre of inequality, poverty and unemployment remains one of the most glaring impediments to South Africa’s goal of national unity and social cohesion.

We also dare not forget the terrible past from which we have come, nor should we forget the many sacrifices made by patriots to ensure our democracy and freedom. Our history abounds with selfless patriots who paved the way for a democratic and free South Africa.
